Each year on Jerusalem Day, when thousands of young people flood the City to take part in the traditional Flag Parade, another alternative march is making its way through the streets of Jerusalem – a march that sets out to celebrate our inclusive Jerusalem that embraces all her residents. The Yerushalmit March (formerly known as “The Family March”) is the local response to external attempts to present the City through a lens of confrontational nationalism.
Already an established tradition, our fourth annual Yerusalmit March took place this year in collaboration with many of our civil society activist partners. Our first March in 2014 brought dozens of people of all ages out onto the streets. This year, around 3,000 participants took part, marching along the route of the “Railway Park”, accompanied by a varied and multicultural musical repertoire performed by the Marsh Dondurma band and Tahrir-the bastion of Mizrahi Culture. The March opened with a launch event in Gonenim Park with family activities, entertainment and rallies of the fans of the Hapoel Katamon and Betar Nordia local soccer teams and ended with a festive gathering at the First Station.
The planning process for each year’s March, in collaboration with our partners and activists, begins several months in advance of Jerusalem Day. If you want to get involved we would be delighted to hear from you. Contact us and we will invite you to be an integral part of the 2018 March.
